[Novalug] Video card questions

I like the ASUS M2N SE Plus (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131249) for AMD chips. It is low cost, supports Dual and Quad core chips, has on-board Nvidia 6100 graphics and works reliably. We have built many computers with these boards and have had great luck. It has a PCI Express slot if you want to add on a better graphics card, though the 6100 is plenty for SL.

You have to load proprietary drivers with Linux, but they work very well.

Subject: [Novalug] Video card questions

In reviewing the SecondLife (SL) specifications (http://secondlife.com/corporate/sysreqs.php), I came across the classic "or better" phrase. Gawd that drives me nutz!

Since SL is graphics intensive, I am interested in building a system that will adequately perform. Now, I have to get Acquisition Authority approval, so this will likely need to be done on a beer drinkers budget (I prefer bier but .... that may be a tad tough).

The minimum graphics requirements for Linux are :
	* NVIDIA GeForce 2, GeForce 4 MX, or better
	* OR ATI Radeon 8500, 9250, or better
while the recommended cards are:
NVIDIA Graphics cards
	* 6000 Series:
	* 6600, 6700, 6800
	* 7000 Series:
	* 7600, 7800, 7900
	* 8000 Series:
	* 8500, 8600, 8800
	* GeForce Go Series:
	* 7600, 7800, 7900
Yeah - you gotta luv the "or better" phrase!

So, I am looking at the following inexpensive MBs
	* ECS RS482-M754 for ($70 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813135058) with ATI Radeon X300-based 2D/3D
	* ECS GF6100-M754 ($80 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813135082) with NVIDIA GeForce 6100
	* ECS 740GM-M ($67) which has an AMD 740G with 2D/3D graphic engine
	* GIGABYTE GA-MA78GM-S2H ($89) which has integrated ATI Radeon HD3200-based graphics(DX10)
Is the AMD 740/780 in the or better category?? Or is it better to just buy a nominally priced MB and insert the better video card??

Rich

Remember, all Windows machines are, by definition, fault tolerant.

              They run Windows don't they!!
