How weird this came up today --- I was just talking with a customer
about etherape about an hour ago. Celestine Prophecy, anyone? :-)
Anyway, it's too different from ethereal to make an apples-to-apples
comparison. What etherape does is show you a graphical representation
of LAN traffic in real time. It spreads discovered hosts around in an
oval shape and shows the traffic between the nodes in different colors
depending on protocol type, application type, etc.
My first experience with it was in Red Hat 253 class in 2001. It was
very cool to play with, and pretty soon we were flooding each other with
packets to make everyone's screen turn red (much to the chagrin of the
instructor). If a student pissed off another student, the retaliation
was swift (and red).
