Could be negative as well.

Why do we remember all the crap the Nazis did?  Or Stalan, or Clinton, or Nixon?

It's so we hopefully don't repeat the same mistake again.  So keeping or
remembering something for posterity's sake can also be a sort of lessons
learned guide, as well.
