I have firefox on kUbuntu.   My 
/home/megan/.mozilla/firefox/pluginreg.dat file has the following entry 
after [HEADER]

[PLUGINS]
/opt/jdk1.6.0_02/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so:$

Providing the file exists, that works for me.
