Have you changed any settings, recently, within CUPS? Are you using the correct driver for your type of printer? Are all cables securely connected to your printer and computer?
Is your printer queue empty when you try and print the problem files?

My guess is your printer driver is messing up. Try switching to a generic printer driver or some other driver that will allow your printer to print and see what happens.

If all you're trying to do is print out a text file, how are you sending the data to the printer? Are you using lpr or are you using VI to send to the printer? If you're using VI to send, try using just lpr and see what happens. If you get the same result, then the problem is either cups or your printer.
