The only helpful comment I have is that SUSE also took a while to bring up gdm on my T42p IF I was using fglrx instead of radeon.  My guess is that ubuntu installed fglrx by default.

I don't know about normal, but I have exactly the same symptoms. Even
more annoying, if I turn off kdm (so it doesn't start at boot), it
just leaves me a blank screen until I hit Alt-F1.

And yes it does seem to take much longer and thrash the hell out of
the disk to the point where I start worrying about my hardware.

If anyone has an explanation, please share!
