Reminder: you can also use LAME and OGG with their highest settings to
prevent excessive compression and get essentially lossless audio quality.
Obviously FLAC is the preferred method, but if you need an acceptable
compromise in audio/space, go for the higher quality switches in the other
encoders. :)  On other interesting fact, some work (currently
experimental) is being done to embed FLAC inside the OGG container.  So
you could keep the FLAC lossless audio quality while using audio players
that may not support FLAC but do support OGG.

Somewhat related, COWON has some of the best designed audio players that
support multiple formats. Check out the (drive based) Cowon A2-- really
impressive.
