Since you posted that this is a SuSE box, booting into the second stanza
in your grub config will do the above. It is usually installed as
failsafe mode, I believe. 

You can boot into this safe mode that disables a number of the default
settings and verify everything is working. You can then boot again and
again, getting into grub edit at the boot splash screen, edit the
options in the safe mode stanza, removing one option at a time and then
verifying you have a "good" boot. The edits are only good for the one
boot so you will need to keep track of only the options that, when
removed, cause a "bad" boot. When you have you you list  of required
options you can then edit your first stanza to ensure your future
default boot will provide a "good" boot.
