[Novalug] distro choice for hosting VMware for linux challenged DR

At work, we run VMware ESX to host both Windows and Solaris servers. I
believe that VMware has a start version of ESX that you can obtain
relatively inexpensively. If you are demoing VMware for work, I
suggest looking seriously at VMware ESX. We average 3 Windows Server
2003 (Enterprise and/or Standard) editions per ESX server and I've put
5 Solaris 10 x86 servers on one ESX server with no problems. The
Solaris 10 servers are all Oracle 10g database servers.

Hi,

I'm running VMWare Workstation and Player happily on SuSE 10.1 and

10.2. Win2K sessions go for weeks (maybe months) between restarts.

The problem I have is that I need to rebuild Workstation almost every

time I do an update. The kernel isn't quite supported, but the

automated build seems to work, as long as I've got my kernel sources up

to date also.

It's a bit of a PITA, but well worth it for the gains. My wife runs

Windows in a VMWare session, and once in a while I backup the VMWare

directory, and I've got a *real* backup of her system in case of

disaster.

That alone is worth some hassles.
