ATA cable select is up to the drives, not the cable. And IDE cable is an 
IDE cable. Lots of the cheaper drives didn't implement the cable select 
right. However, in the last few years I haven't had any problems using 
that setting. But all it saves you is setting the master/slave jumpers.

If you're particular of which drive is first/boot etc. and your bios 
doesn't allow you to "cheat" setting the jumpers manually is the way 
forward.

I've seen problems in the past, from not seeing drives to simply 
destroying the bus and everything comes to a crawling halt.
